How does counselling work during the pandemic?
Counselling during the COVID 19 pandemic is by videocall on Skype.
For clients in Whitehorse, a plan for reintegration of in-person sessions will be implemented based on the advice of Yukon’s Chief Medical Officer.
What is Skype?
Skype is a free and secure videocall platform app. Once you book your session with me, you’ll receive information on how to connect.
What does confidentiality mean?
Confidentiality means I am not ethically allowed to share your story or our conversation with anyone without your permission.
In what circumstances is confidentiality legally allowed to be breached?
There are two times confidentiality rules can broken.
by the therapist is if a client intends to physically harm or kill another person, or they are actively suicidal. The therapist is legally bound to report this to the hospital/medical personnel or police.
if the court system subpoenas the therapists’s notes.
Ethics in Counselling
Amongst other ethical guidelines, it is unethical and damaging to a client for a Counsellor or Therapist to engage in romantic or sexual activity with a client.
How do I know I need therapy?
Some signs you might benefit from therapy are if you are depressed, anxious, feeling angry and/or not sleeping. If you’re saying "yes" to things when you want to scream out “no." If people who really care about you suggest therapy (even if it is not a welcome suggestion, because our culture expects us to be fine all the time.)
Therapy can be helpful before, during and after critical events in your life.
What is art therapy?
Art therapy is anything from a scribble to a painting to following your breath with chalk to see what arises. To see where those marks lead you.
Like putting a jigsaw puzzle together art therapy can explore traumatic events in a protected way by just creating and looking at bits of visual information and seeing where they fit.
Do I have to be an artist to do art therapy?
No, you don’t have to be an artist to do art therapy. In fact, being messy with art supplies is part of the process.
Art in therapy uses our senses to bring information to consciousness. It’s not about being an artist or creating finished artistic pieces.
What can I expect from therapy?
You can expect to explore difficult themes with the guidance of a skilled and compassionate therapist. Together, you determine possible ways to heal.
It is like getting prepared to go on a journey, deciding where to go, getting the map and being ready for surprises.
Therapy is meant to be attuned to what you need and how best to support you.
Does my benefits package or EAP cover your services?
For Canadians, it’s possible your benefits package or EAP program will cover my services. However, I can’t guarantee that. You’ll need to call your service provider and find out.
